Born in 1941 in Chennai, Smt.Suguna Purushothaman received her training in Carnatic music from the maestros in the field, including Sri.Musiri Subramanya Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Thinniam Venkatarama Iyer and P. Sambamoorti. She is also a proficient vainika, which she learnt under Smt. Lalithabai Shamanna.

A Stalwart of Carnatic Music, she is from the bhava laden Musiri School. She is an expert at the Ragam Tanam Pallavi – the highest adventure in a classical concert.

Senior vocalist Suguna Purushothaman is not only a renowned guru, but also a composer and a musicologist. A distinctive feature of her music is the dwi-tala avadhana —the art of keeping two different talams, producing intricate rhythm. She has authored a book of her compositions titled Kadambam. Vocalist K.Gayathri is one of her principal student.
